Tropical North Queensland TAFE has nine campuses and is the largest provider of vocational education and training in Cairns and the Tropical North Queensland region. It was voted Queensland’s Public Training Provider of the Year in 2009.
If you study with us you will enjoy all the benefits of studying with a government-owned organisation, while living and learning in a safe, attractive and diverse environment. Over 13,000 Australians and around 200 international students from 40 countries enrol each year.
Accommodation
The Institute does not provide on-campus accommodation, but we can help you find suitable homestay or share accommodation, often within walking distance of TAFE.
The cost of living in Cairns is less than that of a capital city. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the local farmers’ market each weekend and the cost of commuting is very low – most students catch the bus, ride a bicycle or walk.
Cairns and around
Cairns is one of Australia’s most popular tourism destinations with more than three million visitors a year. It’s the only place in the world where two World Heritage Areas meet – the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics. Visitors can access a wide variety of low-cost activities. The Outback is within easy reach, while around the city offers amazing terrain, abundant wildlife, excellent fishing, white-water rafting, trekking, bushwalking, windsurfing, diving, swimming, snorkelling, shopping, art galleries, live music and theatre.
TNIQT courses
Graduates of a diploma can apply to universities and may be granted up to one year’s credit in a related degree. Certificate and diploma courses include: Cookery, bakery and hospitality; fashion design; horticulture; IT (networking); massage and nursing.
Employment opportunities
Some courses include a vocational placement (unpaid work experience) which is linked to your course and organised by us. Our region thrives on tourism and horticulture and, depending on work experience and skills, you could find work as a chef, waiter, bar staff, baker, porter, farm hand, barista, in retail or customer service, or get an entry-level role in healthcare, a tourism attraction or on an information desk
