Vocational Placements lead to Employment: Case studies

Carpentry and Engineering

In 2009 six students from Careers Australia gained employment on one of Brisbane’s most ambitious city developments, the Clem Jones Tunnel (also known as the CLEM7 Tunnel). The Clem Jones Tunnel is Brisbane’s first major road tunnel, scheduled to open in 2010. The tunnel will link five existing motorways and arterial roads on the north and south sides of the Brisbane River and will cater for around 400,000 vehicles every day. The tollway measures 6.8km from end-to-end and includes two 4.8 kilometre tunnels. After completing their placements, all six Careers Australia students were offered jobs. One trainee will work as a computerised numerical control operator at an engineering plant and the remaining trainees will work on the completion of the tunnel itself.

Nursing and Aged Care

Diploma of Nursing students at Careers Australia complete the Certificate III in Aged Care programme in their first eight weeks before moving in to diploma studies, which enable them to seek work in the aged care industry. As a result, more than 50 per cent of Careers Australia’s international Diploma of Nursing students are able to secure part time work in the Aged Care industry while they complete their diploma studies. The aged care industry is predicted to experience strong jobs growth over the next 12 months while many other sectors downsize as a result of the global financial crisis. The Australian Bureau of Statistics predict a shift over the next twelve months that could see strong employment growth in the residential aged care, potentially creating approximately 3,800 new roles and positions. Due to the high level of demand within the industry, students who work hard and show promise and professionalism during their first aged care placement often find employment in the industry.
