Helen Coates

Helen graduated with a Master of Clinical Audiology degree in December 2012 from Macquarie University

I am now a Clinical Audiologist working for National Hearing Care, Australia's largest private provider of adult diagnostic and rehabilitative hearing service.

Originally I was based in Sydney but now work regionally i.e. out of Newcastle and around the Hunter Region. For those who don't know, Newcastle is a port city with lots of beautiful beaches, and is a lot less hectic than Sydney. Even though it's the second largest city in NSW it's only got a population of 300,000 compared to Sydney's 5 million! The Hunter is a big wine producing region and there are also a lot of mines.

I work in a large clinic in Newcastle three days a week with 3 other audiologists, and on Thursday and Friday go to regional 'one aud' clinics, so it's just me and a receptionist on those days which can be a challenge as I'm still new to the job and there's no other auds to talk to about cases! Having said that, it's fun to run your own clinic and see different towns outside of the big urban areas. I typically see between 5 and 11 clients a day, and perform hearing tests, diagnose different types of hearing loss and associated problems; and conduct rehabilitation programmess which includes, but is not limited to, fitting hearing aids, referring for cochlear implantation and counselling.
