Marguerite O’Brien is studying a Bachelor of Nursing at NMIT

“I started NMIT in February 2007. A main concern before starting was whether I’d feel old but NMIT has lots of mature students! In my class there is a huge mix of ages ranging from 18 to 58.

“My Bachelor of Nursing course is great. At the beginning it was daunting, as I hadn’t studied in a while. Some of the terms were very alien and the timetable confusing but once we got into classes it wasn’t an issue. The course involves weekly lectures where all the class is together, then we’re divided into three smaller groups for tutorials. In these you go more into practical detail of what was covered in the lectures. Two involve labs which are very interesting, and one is set up like a ward in a hospital, and each week you learn something new – for example how to take blood pressure, pulse etc. The main thing that’s stood out so far is the placement in the hospital, which was great and really reinforced why I wanted to do nursing. I’m enjoying the course more and more as time goes on. The other students are very supportive, as are the lecturers.

“There is so much support here for international students. There is a learning support centre attached to the library where you can get help if you’re struggling with any aspect of study, and at the start of each semester they run workshops on things like time management, effective studying skills, how to research for assignments etc. It’s easy to make appointments to see the academic staff if you need to.

“Nelson is lovely, there is so much going on. It is really more of a small town. New Zealanders are very open and trustworthy – a big thing I notice here is that people are unbelievably helpful – if you ask something and someone doesn’t know, they’ll go out of their way to find out and help you.

“Studying overseas is great, I feel I am in a safer country, the scenery is unbelievable and the people are lovely. I do miss my family and friends, but I don’t regret my decision to study here and feel more at home here than
I have anywhere in a long time.”
