The idea of studying in Australia initially came to me when Study Options did a presentation to my year at college. I’d applied for a place in London already, but was very enthusiastic about studying abroad. I got in touch with Study Options and they sent me heaps of information. I applied to two Australian unis.
“In June 2008 my family and I visited Perth – I jumped at the chance to check out Curtin. Turning up without any notice we were greeted by really friendly staff and given a tour of the design building (where my degree would be based) and the campus accommodation. I’d visited UK universities and seen their campus housing, so I was shocked by how gorgeous the accommodation at Curtin was! Walking around I could see BBQ pits which I was told were for anybody to use – I could already imagine myself there with a group of friends!
“I’m really enjoying my course. Photography is my main passion and Australia offers vast amounts of contrasts to work with, from the city to the ocean and desert. I have done lots of things here which I don’t think would have been possible if I had gone to uni in the UK – like being able to go to the beach! There is a big mix of cultures here and everyone is very accepting. I’ve met people from all over the world and it’s really interesting to learn about their countries and cultures.
“I still can’t believe I’m living here. I’m always saying to my girls: ‘Guess what?! We’re in Australia!’ getting butterflies all over again, going round with a massive grin on my face. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. I’d say, follow your dreams and don’t let anyone put you off because ‘it’s really far away’. Everyone is just a call or an email away.”
