Macquarie University

Macquarie is one of Australia’s leading universities, ranked ninth in Australia and in the top 40 in the Asia-Pacific Region by the international Shanghai Jiao Tong University Academic Rankings of World Universities. We are investing heavily in advanced research covering diverse fields, and continue to develop our strong links with industry, government and the community. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, our diverse student population and our international perspective. Our graduates are much sought after, and well-prepared for work and life as global citizens.

Established in 1964, Macquarie is distinguished by the range and quality of its course offerings. The university offers world-class courses in areas including commerce, linguistics, psychology and environmental science. The Master of Applied Finance programme, for example, is the world’s largest, and the MBA has been ranked as one of the best in the Asia-Pacific region. A range of courses are offered in the following areas:

Business, commerce, economics, finance, statistics

Computing, engineering and technology

Education

Humanities

Law

Medical, health, speech and hearing and chiropractic studies

Psychology and linguistics

Environmental sciences

Society, culture, museum studies, media and philosophy.

Macquarie University is committed to being a leader in research. Generous scholarships are available for suitable students to complete PhD studies in the University’s core areas of research strength.

Campus location and facilities

Macquarie is a thriving community of over 32,000 students – including 8,900 international students – located on 135 hectares of parkland  some 30 minutes drive north-west of Sydney Harbour. The modern, well-equipped campus hosts a research park in collaboration with industry, a new Sport and Aquatic centre, a university train station, and is next to a large shopping centre. Student accommodation is available both on- and off-campus.

Successful graduates

Given the high calibre of its courses and teaching staff, it is not surprising Macquarie’s graduates are highly sought after: their starting salaries have been the highest in Australia for more than a decade, as ranked by The Good Universities Guide (1998-2008).

An international experience

For international students, Macquarie offers a friendly, inclusive environment designed to foster the sharing of ideas and experiences. We provide a range of specialised support services to ensure students make the most of their time here, and the Macquarie University International Scholarships scheme is one of the most generous of its kind. First-year students can take advantage of the buddy programme, which matches them up with a second- or third-year who can help them adjust to university life in Australia. There is also a dedicated International Student Services team, who can help with enquiries about accommodation, health cover, fees, social activities, study workshops, and personal welfare. International Student Services also provide a full orientation programme for international students at the start of each semester, and organise social events throughout the year.

British student Olivia Wilson recently graduated from the Bachelor of Marine Science at Macquarie

"I was involved in activities here that I just couldn’t do in England,” says Olivia. As part of her Bachelor of Marine Science, Olivia spent two months on exchange at a university in Fiji, went whale-watching and conducted fieldwork at the Great Barrier Reef. “I surf as well, so coming here was partly a lifestyle choice,” says Olivia.

“Doing an environment-based degree meant I learnt a lot about Australia’s environment. It’s incredibly diverse, and with the size of the country and its temperate and tropical regions, there’s plenty to explore.” Olivia was awarded a Macquarie University International Scholarship, “I was ecstatic when it came through. I booked the flight the next day,” she remembers.

As well as her fieldwork in exotic locations, Olivia was impressed with flexibility of her degree. “I was able to complement the science-based programme with units in anthropology and politics. The lecturers were very enthusiastic, friendly and accessible. After two and a half years I felt as though I knew most of the lecturers in my subject area. This seems unique to Macquarie as most of my friends at other Sydney universities and the UK can hardly name their lecturers.”

Now back in England, Olivia has made lifelong friends in Australia and plans to return in the future. “I particularly enjoyed being in and around Sydney which has a lot of exciting things going on all the time like film festivals and the Mardi Gras.”

Olivia is continuing her interest in marine science and has recently been accepted into the Master of Science in Hydrography at Plymouth University in the UK.
