Monash University

Established in Melbourne in 1958, Monash is Australia's most progressive and internationalised university. Through collaborative research, student exchanges and an ever-growing alumni network, it has links with people, organisations and industry throughout Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. Ranked in the top 50 universities in the world in 2009 by The Times Higher Education Supplement, and a member of the Group of Eight (equivalent to the Russell Group in the UK) Monash is a young, modern and dynamic university, committed to quality education and research.

It is a comprehensive university, delivering a range of courses across ten faculties to students from over 170 countries at campuses, instititutes and centres in Australia, South Africa, Malaysia and Italy.

Monash is world-renown for research in reproductive sciences, stem cell research, regenerative medicine, green chemistry, materials engineering and economic modelling, to name a few. More than AU$90million a year is spent on research and coursework scholarships, while in 2009 Monash generated over AU$240million in National Competitive Grants to pursue its research endeavours.

The University seeks to make the student experience a rewarding one by connecting students with exemplary teachers. It is home to some of Australia's leading teachers and researchers who are recognised in competitive teaching excellence awards and grants. These include four winners of the Prime Minister Teacher of the Year awards; eight Federation Fellows and three Australian Fellows.

STUDENT SERVICES
Monash invests heavily in teaching and learning facilities. It has state-of-the-art multi-media lecture theatres, over 2,500 computer work stations and libraries that contain approximately three million items.
The University is more than a place to study, though. It offers the chance to join a community that supports academic achievement, personal growth and lasting friendships. Supporting a Student Services Centre is the Student Information Index, a weblink to clubs and societies, associations, chaplains, disability services, sports facilities, health services, learning support, legal advice, transport, fees, computer access and timetables - all at the tips of your fingers.

GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT OUTCOMES
Many courses at Monash provide opportunities to combine work and study through internships and work experience in public and private sector entities. Placement units (where students work for an external organisation) can in some cases be tied to a research project within a degree. For more details, please visit http://careers.monash.edu.au/students-grads/work-integrated-learning/index.html
Graduates successfully transition to the workforce given Monash's status as one of Australia's best higher education institutions and its recognition globally.

LINKS WITH INDUSTRY
The University is connected to organisations domestically and internationally. These linkages are facilitated by external consultancies it undertakes across its centres and institutes for corporate, public sector and science-based clients.

Andrea Lindquist is a graduate of the MBBS at Monash, and a Rhodes Scholarship recipient

As a Rhodes Scholar, Anthea will study for a Masters in Global Health Science at Oxford University in the UK, a degree which imbues graduates with advanced skills in public health development, economics and epidemiology. She then plans to return to Melbourne for specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Anthea was chosen from four finalists from the state of Victoria, including a second Monash University medicine student, Robert Mitchell, by a selection panel including the Govenor of Victoria, Professor David De Kretser. Anthea says she applied for a Rhodes Scholarship because she recognises that acquiring knowledge and becoming part of a worldwide network of people who share the same vision are powerful tools to facilitate change. "Through work and travel in Vanuatu and Fiji I've witnessed the inequalities that exist in the provision of healthcare and as a result I have become passionate about effecting change," she says.

Inspired by the global health campaigns of fellow Australians Catherine Hamilin and Fred Hollows, Anthea wants to dedicate her career to improvements to maternal and child health in disadvantaged communities in Australia and the region.
