The city of Newcastle, New South Wales

Newcastle is situated on the east coast of Australia, two hours drive north of Sydney. Newcastle city reaches out to sea on a peninsula at the mouth of the Hunter River. This distinctive geography creates the only Australian city with a CBD on the beach and the harbour waterfront. Newcastle is set on a breathtaking stretch of the Pacific Ocean coastline and is Australia’s sixth largest city. It boasts some of Australia’s best beaches and waterways for swimming, surfing, sailing and other water sports. Combined with a low cost of living and a favourable climate, Newcastle presents a relaxed and welcoming lifestyle. With a regional population of about 500,000, the city supports a thriving business and commercial sector and an excellent network of healthcare and educational facilities. Newcastle is home to some of the best entertainment venues on the east coast and offers many of the usual city comforts – restaurants, cafes, parks and gardens, theatres, art galleries, shopping centres and nightclubs.

The city of Newcastle has built a solid international and domestic reputation for the wealth of talent that radiates from it. From the commercial success of bands such as Silverchair to the annual cultural activities such as the Shootout Film Festival and the This Is Not Art exhibition, Newcastle boasts a vibrant artistic and creative scene, attracting attention worldwide.

Just ten minutes drive from the city centre, visitors can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s unique and beautiful wildlife. Blackbutt Reserve hosts spacious modern facilities which allow close viewing of a variety of animal – kangaroos, koalas, emus, wallabies, wombats and an array of Australian bird species. Sakile Mamutse from Zimbabwe is studying the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle

“I chose to study at Newcastle because it was in a coastal city which promised to be vibrant. The location made it possible for me to balance my life and studies without compromising one or the other.
“The best thing about my programme? That it is highly interactive. It’s problem- and evidence-based, so it enables me to develop skills individually. The teachers don’t just feed out information, they encourage us to think as individuals.
“I think the Bachelor of Nursing degree will help me tremendously in my communication skills, which is one of the major skills you have to have in order to be able to implement care. Also having problem-solving skills is a great thing to have in any situation in life and I feel my programme has really equipped me in that sense. Also the degree is recognised worldwide, which means that I can be as mobile as I want in my career – the sky is the limit for me!
“The support you receive from the University – in both academic and personal terms – is excellent. It is one of the things I rely on as an international student away from home and with no close family around. What would I say to anyone thinking of coming to study here at Newcastle? Congratulations on making a great decision! The University is exceptional, I think, in producing quality graduates and citizens of the world.”
