The Melbourne Model is an exciting new vision for education in Australia, providing a small number of undergraduate degrees together with specialised graduate schools. The emphasis is on academic breadth as well as disciplinary depth. This means that graduates have an increased capacity to negociate their way successfully in a world where knowledge is rapidly renewed, discipline boundaries are constantly shifting and employees are required to communicate in a variety of cultural settings. Teacher education at the University of Melbourne: Master of Teaching

Australia's approach to teacher education is being reformed by an exciting new programme from the country's top school of education, with graduates being snapped up by schools in all sectors.

The Master of Teaching, from the University of Melbourne's Graduate School of Education (MGSE), is distinctly different. Offered only at graduate level, its focus is on linking theory with practice and preparing teacher candidates (as student teachers are called) to meet their students' individual needs.

Teaching is one of the most challenging professions, and research shows that quality teaching is the single biggest factor in predicting student success. So it stands to reason that teachers require thorough, expert preparation for the classroom.

The Master of Teaching adopts a 'clinical' approach to teacher education, and is only one of a few pre-service teaching qualifications in the world to do so.

Put simply, the clinical approach means closely linking theory learnt in university with practical experience gained in classrooms. Universities work in partnership with schools in a similar way to how they work with hospitals to teach medical students.

In the Master of Teaching, cohorts of teacher candidates are in schools two days per week from the first few weeks of the programme and every week thereafter. The rest of their week is spent attending lectures and seminars at university. They are supported by a network of experts: veteran teachers in partner schools who provide placement support, and university specialists who provide the link between theory and practice.

The clinical approach is being recognised internationally as an important step toward improving educational outcomes for all students. President Obama's highly respected Secretary for Education, Arne Duncan, has been driving an agenda to rebrand teaching as a practice-based profession like nursing or medicine, where there is a close link and mutual exchange between practice in schools and theory in universities.

Prestigious universities in the US, such as Stanford, have adopted clinical models for their teacher education degrees.

In Australia, the Master of Teaching's profile has been growing since its introduction in 2008, and it is increasingly common for school principles to seek our graudates for employment.

Initial research shows Master of Teaching graduatestend to be more prepared for the classrom than graduates o other teacher education programmes, and this steadily growing reputation has generated a year-on-year increase in demand from aspiring teachers.

The course is a fantastic option for those who want to reach their best possible potential as teachers.
