University of New South Wales (UNSW)

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is Australia's first international university attracting outstanding scholars and students from around the world. Its motto - Scientia Manu et Mente (Knowledge by Hand and Mind) - encapsulates the University's central philosophy of balancing the practical and the scholarly.

UNSW was established in 1949 an has been receiving international students since 1951. Today, approximately one in five students at the University came from overseas and many of our recent students are the children and grandchildren of UNSW's original international students.

UNSW is highly regarded in the international academic community. It consistently scores highly in a range of national and international rankings, including:

  • 49th in the world overall in the 2011 QS World University Rankings

  • 4th top research-intensive university in Australia based on the Australian Research Council's Excellence in Research for Australia report

  • 1st in Australia and 35th in the world for the leading full-time MBA in the 2011 Financial Times ranking of the top 100 global MBA programme

  • Consistently ranked as the leading engineering faculty in Australia

A foundation member of the Group of Eight, Australia's leading research universities, UNSW is also one of only three Australian institutions in the prestigious Universitas 21, a consortium of 17 leading universities in 10 countries. UNSW is a comprehensive teaching and research university with international recognition in photovoltaics, solar energy, quantum computing, interactive cinema and HIV/Aids research.

UNSW enjoys a vibrant and cosmopolitan campus life. Of the 53,000 students studying at UNSW, more than 12,000 are international students from over 120 countries. The University also maintains strong links with its international graduate community - the UNSW exchange programme has over 190 student exchange opportunities in 32 countries and there is an extensive network of alumni chapters throughout Asia.

Located in Sydney, Australia's biggest city, UNSW is close to the city's main business hub, providing easy access to a wide range of academic, cultural and social activities. All three UNSW campuses - Kensington, Paddington and Canberra - provide a vibrant educational and communal environment. The 38 hectare Kensington site, the main UNSW campus, is located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, approximately 15 minutes from the CBD and Sydney Harbour, and 10 minutes from popular east coast beaches such as the famous Coogee Beach and Bondi Beach. The Kensington campus is also a 15-minute taxi ride from Sydney International Airport.

Stephen Bennett, from Manchester, is studying Master of Commerce at UNSW

After doing a Bachelors degree in Manchester and completing a short stint in the workforce, Stephen wanted to do a Masters, and joined the Australian School of Business at UNSW because of its stellar reputation in the Asia-Pacific region. Now enrolled on the Master of Commerce, he is doing dual specialisations in business strategy and organisation and management studies, honing his interest in entrepreneurship.

"Lectures here are very engaging," he says. The Australian School of Business is home to global business leaders with close industry links, which enables the students to analyse real-life projects and business scenarios. "But instead of textbook solutions, we are taught to think independently and critique everything."

Stephen enjoys the cosmopolitan mix of students at UNSW. "At Masters level, you want university to be an environment where people from different backgrounds can come together to share ideas. I really enjoy talking to students from developing countries, in particular, about the way they view the world."

Stephen says UNSW checks all the boxes of a top university. But he is getting more from his study than he expected. "It's the openness of the spaces here in Australia that is so refreshing to someone from the UK, " he says. "It's the beaches close by, the sporty, outdoorsy culture and friendly atmosphere that makes it all so much more rewarding."

He feels his time at UNSW will give him a point of difference. "Studying abroad is key these days. Everyone studies in their home country. If you go abroad I think it shows employers that you are curious, willing to take risks. It sets you apart. I now have all these options open to me, globally."
