University of Queensland

Ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world*, The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions. 45,500 students study at UQ, 11,300 of whom are international.

At UQ we constantly strive to deliver excellence in the areas of learning, discovery and engagement so our students graduate with an education that is not only the most comprehensive and high-quality we can deliver, but is practical, relevant and globally-minded.

LEARNING

Students learn from academics who have won more teaching awards than their peers at any other Australian university, and can choose from over 375 programmes, at undergraduate, postgraduate and research higher degree levels, in diverse areas across six faculties.

DISCOVERY

They discover a university with eight world class research institutes, and researchers whose innovations are having a global impact, including the creation of a cervical cancer vaccine, breakthroughs in dengue fever prevention, and the installation of the largest photovoltaic solar panel in the southern hemisphere. As a UQ student you have the opportunity to be taught by and work alongside these researchers.

ENGAGEMENT

UQ students engage with the national and international community through worldwide internship opportunities in diverse programme areas, field trips with destinations ranging from tropical Heron Island in North Queensland to Hong Kong, student exchanges and study abroad opportunities. Since 2006, over 900 UQ students have spent a semester abroad with one of our partner institutions.

It's a thorough approach, which gives our students the solid practical and theoretical grounding they need for their career. And it's why the 2011 Employer Review of the QS Rankings of World Universities ranked UQ 51st in the world for graduate employability.

We call it the UQ advantage.

Nikki Kitson is studying the Bachelor of Economics at UQ

"I'm still waiting for it to sink in - the reality of living and studying in Brisbane, Australia. Everything has run so smoothly that it all seems a little too natural to be here... a whole 16,532km from home! Being faced with the numerous decisions leaving school in England I decided to break it down to what I love to learn, and where I would love to learn it. One introductory email to Study Options soon multiplied into many, and with their fantastic up-to-date knowledge on individual schools within universities I was guided on what to do, in particular with regards to funding. I was instantly attracted to the University of Queensland: the gorgeous campuses, outstanding reputation and worldwide connections. I emailed my grades and interests to Study Options and was greeted with information about the School of Economics Centenary Scholarship. I straightaway began the application process. I have always had a passion for economics. I enjoy learning the classroom theories that fundamentally define the millions of decisions made worldwide. The participation of extra-curricular work at school helped support my application. Already, I am so thankful for the opportunity and having just started lectures and tutorials I am keen to get stuck in and hit the books. I do believe it is important to make the most out of everything here. However easy it is to say no to new challengesit is ten times more worthwhile to say yes. I have found joining new clubs and teams the best way to settle in, develop skills, learn life experiences and of course make friends. The only (somewhat positive) problem being the vast range there is to get involved with; I now appreciate the cliche of wishing there were more hours in the day! Not only are there many sporting opportunities from beach volleyball to wakeboarding, there are plenty of course-related social clubs to help start early on building graduation employability and make vital connections necessary for internships and work experience. As for Brisbane itself there's everything you need - cafes, parks, areas to relax, a buzzing nightlife and a short journey to the Sunshine Coast or the Gold Coast. Three months ago I never thought I'd be sat reading a Microeconomics textbook... in the sun... in February!"
