University of Tasmania

The University of Tasmania is the fourth oldest in Australia, with a well-established reputation for teaching and research. UTAS is a comprehensive university, offering a range of academic programmes, and provides a supportive student learning environment.

COSTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The University has lower fees than many other comparable Australian universities and the cost of living in Tasmania is lower than most other regions in Australia. There are now over 3.500 international students from more than 90 countries at the University. UTAS also offers one of the largest scholarship schemes for international students to be found anywhere in Australia.

LIVING IN TASMANIA

Tasmania is Australia's beautiful island state, with wild, spectacular landscapes from magnificent rainforests and rugged mountains to white sandy beaches and bright blue waters, all close to our campuses. Our cities are small and beautiful, the people are friendly, the climate is temperate, and the lifestyle is relaxed. Indoor and outdoor pursuits are plentiful and the mainland is within easy reach. An hour's flight will take you to Melbourne; two hours will see you in Sydney.

"I chose UTAS because the course suited my interests and the cost of living in Tasmania is lower than other places in Australia," says Kyle Hislendager, a Canadian student who studied a Master of Environmental Management at the University. "I also considered the natural scenery in Tasmania - for me, the best part about living here is being such a short distance from so many great outdoor attractions." Brett Ferguson, also from Canada, completed a PhD at the University. "Living in Tasmania and studying in the School of Plant Science was an amazing experience. The nurturing environment provided by the School was ideal for me to obtain the skills I needed to grow as a researcher. My wife and I came to Tasmania knowing no-one, but left having gained lots of friends."

TASMANIA - THE NATURAL CHOICE TO STUDY SCIENCE

WHY STUDY SCIENCE AT UTAS?

  1. Distinctive programmes take advantage of our unique location - 42 degrees south, bordered by the Southern Ocean, we are the closest point in Australia to Antarctica and have access to flora, fauna and ecology not found anywhere else in the world.
  2. A high quality teaching and research environment, led by national and international research-active staff
  3. A friendly atmosphere with small class sizes, offering students more opportunities for interaction with teaching staff
  4. State-of-the-art facilities, including Australia's first human interface technology laboratory
  5. Approximately one-third of Tasmania is reserved in national parks and wilderness world heritage areas. Fieldwork and excursions maximise these ecosystems, located right in our backyard. "As part of my course, this year I experienced my first overnight field trip to Cockle Creek at the entrance to the South West National Park, which I think is a fairly rare and unique experience," says TIffany Moreno, an American student studying Master of Environmental Management at UTAS.
  6. Successful research collaborations with government and industry partners (including forestry, mining, energy production, agriculture and conservation) and home to national research centres including Antarctic climate and ecosystems, food safety, forestry and ore deposit research.
  7. Excellent career prospects. Our courses give students expertise to meet areas of current and predicted employment demand, as well as generic, transferable skills. Many courses include industry placements (such as agricultural science, engineering and surveying).
  8. It's the natural place to study. Here you can experience some of the cleanest air and water in the world and enjoy Tasmania's climate, relaxed lifestyle, natural history and cultural diversity, all while studying at one of Australia's most respected universities.

Tom Sparkes, 20, is at UTas as a Study Abroad student from the University of East Anglia

“I’m studying a mix of environmental units including wilderness management and natural resources management.

“I chose UTas because it has a great reputation for wilderness management and environmental studies due to Tasmania’s vast World Heritage wilderness areas.

“I arrived at the start of the first semester break. I was very excited to be in Tasmania and immediately started exploring the city and surrounding hills.

“The university is fantastic with a huge number of very interesting course units on offer. The teaching staff are open and accommodating and the workload very manageable.

“I rent a room in a shared Tasmania University Union house. This seems the best way to play it as it is quite flexible and you can change houses if you don’t get on somewhere!

“In your spare time, the best option is to team up with some other students and buy or rent a car so you get out and see the real Tasmania. There are lots of clubs and societies here, though from my experience these are quite laid-back so you really need to get involved to get something out of them. I do a lot of rock climbing and bush walking, both of which have active clubs, but it’s also easy to get out and do this on your own with friends as there are a load of walks to do around Hobart.

“My advice for anyone thinking of studying here? Be proactive – Tasmania is laid back but not boring, it’s really important to go out and find whatever’s going on. And there’s always plenty going on – it’s a stunningly beautiful place!”
