The ever-growing success of the New Zealand wine industry has created a demand for highly trained and skilled industry professionals, and for locally focused scientific research of the highest standards.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Wine Science at the University of Auckland caters for these demands. It uses the experiences of winemaking in New Zealand to highlight the multiple dimensions and applications of wine science.
The University of Auckland uses the beautiful and historic Goldwater Vineyard, the oldest winery on Waiheke Island, as a teaching facility for the Postgraduate Diploma. The Goldwater Wine Science Centre consists of a 14-hectare vineyard and winery that provides a unique venue for students to live, study and work in an important winegrowing region of New Zealand.

“Before joining the wine science programme at The University of Auckland I studied a conjoint Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science majoring in marketing and chemistry. I knew that somehow, I wanted to combine my love of sales, science, travelling and great food and wine in my career!
“In 2010, I enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Wine Science. I was working as a temp at New Zealand Winegrowers during my studies. Whilst completing the final semester, I began working full-time at Villa Maria Estate in Auckland as a laboratory technician. After completing two vintages, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to shift across to the sales department as a national accounts executive in January 2013.
“The wine science programme encouraged and provided many opportunities for hands-on experience in all aspects of winemaking. Additionally, the winery visits and participation in wine events were always educational, fun and exciting. There were also many great networking opportunities throughout the course. Additionally, the very social side of the course has made me many life-long friends among my classmates! I believe this programme has been a great doorway that allowed me to pursue my interests in the technical and business side of the wine industry.”
