Could we reprogramme our brains to work better?
Researchers from the University of Western Australia in Perth have discovered that electromagnetic stimulation can alter brain function which could allow our brains to work better.
The team, along with researchers from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in France, found that weak electromagnetic pulses can shift abnormal neural connections to their correct locations on mice born with abnormal brain organisation.
PhD student Kalina Makowiecki said that “our findings greatly increase our understanding of the specific cellular and molecular events that occur in the brain during this therapy and have implications for how best to use it in humans to treat disease and improve brain function”.
This research could have important implications for the treatment of nervous system disorders that are related to abnormal brain organisation like depression, tinnitus and epilepsy.
