Benson, a student from Papua New Guinea, just completed his Master of Development Studies at Murdoch University’s Perth campus. Having been working in the development sector in Papua New Guinea, Benson resigned from his previous job to take up study at Murdoch as a recipient of a prestigious Australia Awards Scholarship.

"Back home in Papua New Guinea I was working with international organisations, managing contractors for DFAT funding and all my work was on development, so that kind of motivated me to become a development practitioner.

"While at Murdoch, a treasured moment for me was my two-week intensive practical experience at the State Parliament House under the unit Parliamentary Democracy, where I was actually observing everything that is involved in a parliamentary democratic country. Looking back to my country, you will find that we are riddled with all sorts of corruption. Looking at how best a democratic country can operate, it kind of gave me the courage that we can do it the same in our country.

"In June, I submitted a sustainable development project to the Research for Development Impact Network. It was part of the Research for Development Impact Network RDI National Conference held in Sydney. They called out for students in tertiary institutions to participate and so we developed a project on disaster risk-management training. With my research partner, Stephanie, we submitted a paper and we were successful in being one of the five shortlisted teams. Eventually we went over to Sydney and presented and, at the end of the day, we won the AU$10,000 grant.

"What I liked most about my Murdoch degree was the flexibility in choosing electives that contribute to my professional growth and development post studies. I would recommend Murdoch to future international students simply because Murdoch has a friendly academic environment that is encouraging everyone to continue focusing on striving for the best."
