Leo Hutchings

Leo is at the University of Melbourne studying the Master of Laws

“I had always dreamt of going to Australia to travel. Never did I think that I would also be studying a Master of Laws at one of the most prestigious universities in the world; the University of Melbourne.

“It was made much easier by the fact that Study Options did a lot of the legwork for me. All I had to do was provide them with the form and documents. A small piece of advice is to go to the open days they hold as they waive the fee for applications if you apply to the universities on the spot (you will need the extra money later!)

“I would definitely argue that Melbourne is one of the greatest cities in the world. Because of its diversity and multiculturalism there is something for absolutely everything. Whether you like lively nightlife, cafes and restaurants, thrill-seeking adventure or exploring outdoors you will find something suited to you (cliché, but you really will).

“Melbourne also has some of the best public transport in Australia, with trams, buses, trains and a new metro system to be completed by 2021, getting around is free if your within the free tram zone and easily accessible in all the suburbs.

“The quality of teaching on my course has been beyond expectations. I have probably had more international teachers from universities like Harvard, UCL and Auckland than I have Australian lecturers, all of whom bring a vast range of rich, diverse academic and professional experience to the classes. The classes are also capped at 30 students so you will always have an interactive learning and engage with other class members who are just as diverse as Melbourne itself in terms of nationality, culture and background.

“One piece of advice would be, make it your business to know where the cheap places are to get food and drink because there are some amazing deals which can make your social life much cheaper. If you can find a job, the wages here are much higher than the UK, which has helped me a huge amount with living costs.”
